Global Thinking; Local Issues: BioBucs Bring Home 1st Place in Eco Challenge

 May 2019

[HHS] – A team of six highly-motivated students from Hoover High School is celebrating the team's first place win in the Lexus Eco Challenge and a total of $25,000 in award money for their efforts. The BioBucs is one of only four secondary 1st-Place teams nationwide in the Lexus Eco Challenge, a national STEM program and contest inspiring and empowering students to learn about the environment and take action to improve it.
Earlier this academic year, the team was awarded $10,000 for its entry in the Regional Challenge, and now as a First Place winner in the Final National Challenge, Hoover High School will receive another grant for $15,000, which will be shared by the school ($3,000), the teacher advisor ($2,000) and scholarships for the students ($10,000).  BioBucs set out to study particle pollution in metro Birmingham, inspired in part by the film Toxic City. Team members compared article pollution samples in Hoover and the heavily-industrialized area of North Birmingham. They also educated people about the dangers of particle pollution and planted trees to decrease the deposition of the particles. They worked with GASP (a local clean air advocate), the Southern Research SIPSE program (a summer STEM internship for teachers), and the Hoover Beautification Board Arbor Day Project during the project.

This year’s 12th annual Lexus Eco Challenge (, created by Lexus and Scholastic, had more than 2,300 students participate nationwide.  From the 32 Final Challenge participating teams, Lexus and Scholastic have chosen two $30,000 Grand Prize-winning teams and eight $15,000 First Place teams. In all, $500,000 in grants and scholarships have been awarded throughout the seven-month-long environmental education program and contest.
