2022 HCS Band Spotlight: Berry Middle School Bands

May 2, 2022

(Hoover, AL)- It has been a banner year for the Berry Middle School Bands. This year the band had over thirty students represent Berry at the UAB, Samford, and Montevallo honor bands.  Seven students earned spots in the Alabama Bandmasters Association (ABA) District 4 Honor Band. Also, two students earned a position on the 2022 ABA All-State Band.

These individual accomplishments carried through for success for the ensembles. The Berry Band earned a superior rating, the highest level of achievement, at the 2022 ABA State Music Performance Assessment. This is the fifteenth straight year the Berry Band has earned a superior rating at the state level!

Director of Bands Brian Wilson said, “I am so proud of every band student’s growth this year.  The year's highlight was the opportunity for our 7th and 8th-grade student musicians to perform at State Music Performance Assessment. They were awesome and represented our school and community well. As we put the pandemic further in the rearview mirror, I expect even more great opportunities for our Berry Band!”

The Berry Band is the largest student organization at Berry Middle School. The band program has consistently earned superior ratings at music performance assessments throughout the southeast. The Berry Band is under the direction of Wilson and Associate Director A.B. Baggett.

In January, Wilson was recognized for his outstanding work and leadership as director of bands at Berry Middle School. He was selected as a 2022 Teachers in the Trenches Award winner presented by the Finley Committee. The award honors educators whose dedication and kindness impact students’ lives beyond the classroom. His colleagues and parents praise Wilson for being committed to ensuring the success of his band students by preparing them to succeed at the next level and providing opportunities for them to gain valuable music lessons to improve their skills as musicians.
