September 2020
Taylor Hottel

HCS - On September 9, 2020, twenty-two seniors from Hoover City Schools’ two high schools - Hoover High and Spain Park High - were announced as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. These students were chosen for their outstanding academic performance on the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test (PSAT/NMSQT). Students were chosen from more than 1.5 million high school juniors who took the test, and the semifinalists represent less than the top 1% of the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Of these semifinalists, more than 10% attend Hoover High School and Spain Park High School.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) defines its mission as “...to recognize and honor the academically talented students of the United States.” The NMSC has been awarding scholarship to students since 1955, and this year will award approximately 7,600 scholarships worth more than $30 million.
