(Hoover, AL) – Hoover High and Spain Park High School students earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These programs celebrate students' hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance. The academic honors for rural area, Black, Indigenous, and/or Latino students are an opportunity for students to share their strong academic achievements with colleges and scholarship programs that are seeking to recruit diverse talent. The awards recognize high-performing students and help them stand out to colleges.

Hoover High’s College and Career Specialist Cindy Bond said, “We’re thrilled to celebrate our students and recognize them for the great work they’ve been doing. We’re proud of their strong academic performance in the classroom and on College Board assessments like the PSAT/NMSQT or AP exams. We’re thankful for opportunities like the National Recognition programs that recognize our exceptional students for their outstanding academic abilities.”

Spain Park High’s College and Career Specialist Tracy Prater said, “We are so proud of these students who excel in every way at our school. They are young people of strong character and intellect. This recognition is beyond deserved! They are all certain to have the same profound and positive impact on their future academic communities as they have at Spain Park.”

The criteria for eligible students include:

•  GPA of 3.5 or higher.

•  PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 assessment scores that are within the top 10% of assessment takers in each state for each award program or earned a score of 3 or higher on 2 or more AP Exams in 9th and 10th grade.

• Attend school in a rural area or small town, or identify as African American/Black, Hispanic American/Latino, or Indigenous/Native.

Spain Park High School Awardee Terry Lamar said, “The more I learned about the honor, the more excited I got. It means I will stand out more when it comes to applying for colleges and scholarships, which is very important to me. I am considering both in-state and out-of-state schools, and I know that opportunities will open for me with the help of the College Board National African American Recognition Programs. I am proud of my achievements as a student at Spain Park High School, and I am grateful for the recognition.”

High-achieving students from all 50 states and U.S. territories were eligible to apply to four programs: National African American Recognition Program, National Hispanic Recognition Program, National Indigenous Recognition Program, and/or National Rural/Small Town Recognition Program.  

In August 2023, the College Board awarded 72,000 students nationwide with academic honors through the annual National Recognition Programs. The programs celebrate underrepresented students who excel academically on College Board assessments, including PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and AP exams. Students can include this academic honor on their college applications, and many colleges intentionally recruit awardees through the College Board’s Student Search Service.
