New Teachers 2020-2021
Meet: Dessilyn Chappell
Over the past twelve years Dessilyn Chappell has taught in a variety of teaching positions. She began her career at Meadow View Elementary in Alabaster, AL in third grade. After two years she then made the transition to second grade and taught in that position for six years. During her time at Meadow View she was a grade level chair, and a representative on various committees that focused on reading, at-risk students, English Language Learners, culture, and parent involvement. Ms. Chappell has spent the last three years working at Huntingdon College as an instructor in their Teacher Education program.
Ms. Chappell received her undergraduate degree from UAB in Communications Management. After graduation she immediately started on a Masters in Elementary Education at the University of Montevallo. She also holds a Masters and an Educational Specialist Degree in Instructional Leadership, all obtained at the University of Montevallo. Currently she is a doctoral student at UAB finishing up her coursework in Early Childhood Education. She will begin her dissertation in January of 2021.
Meet: Caroline Sims
Hello Trace Crossings! My name is Caroline Sims and I am so thrilled to be joining TCES family. I grew up in Hoover and am a graduate of Hoover High School. I love Hoover City Schools and I cannot wait to invest in the students like I was invested in growing up. Teaching has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember and it is an honor to be able to begin my third year teaching at Trace Crossings. My husband and I enjoy spending time with our dog, being outside, spending time with family, and anything that involves Alabama sports. I am blessed to be a part of Team Trace, and I am so excited to embark on this journey.
Meet: Claire Calkins
My name is Claire Calkins! I am originally from Richmond, Virginia but moved to Birmingham last year. I love Birmingham and am proud to call it home! I graduated from the University of Alabama and completed my degree in the School of Education's Multiple Abilities Program. I will be in my second year of teaching after completing my first year at Deer Valley Elementary. My passion is teaching and loving our children! Outside of teaching, I love spending time with my parents, younger twin siblings, and friends. I also love spending time outside and reading. I am so excited to be a part of Team Trace and can't wait for an awesome year!
Meet: Emily Bass
Hello! My name is Emily Bass. I grew up in Headland, Alabama. I attended Auburn University where I got my B.S. degree in Elementary Education. I will be starting my 6th year of teaching at Trace. I previously taught Pre-K, 1st, and 2nd grade at Beauregard Elementary School in Lee County. My husband, McKinley, is a firefighter, and we are expecting our first baby boy in September! I am so excited to be a part of Team Trace!
