HHS Scholars Bowl Team Places at Harvard
5/20/2019 The Hoover High School Scholars Bowl team won fourth place in a field of 36 in early November at the prestigious Harvard Fall Tournament. This was Hoover High School's first time attending this event, which drew teams from across the United States.
In a highly competitive field that included nine teams currently ranked in the top 70 nationally, five teams that made the top 15 at Nationals last year, and the teams that finished first and second nationally, the HHS Scholars Bowl Team finished the day at 9-3 to arrive at the 4th place finish.
"We lost to the defending National Champions, Hunter of New York, by three questions in a hard-fought game that could have gone either way, and dropped a second game to #12 Lehigh Valley, PA 355-200, again on the last three questions. Meanwhile, we beat several teams above us in early rankings, and put up a remarkable playoff smashing of Phillips Prep Academy, another team previously ranked ahead of us, by a 620-110 margin. Phillips managed only three questions against us in that 20 question match," faculty sponsor Mr. Joshua Rutsky said.
Hoover High School hosts the Hoover Invitational Tournament on December 2nd on the HHS campus. This will be the largest tournament in the Southeast this year and is drawing nine of the top 25 teams.
"While we will not play at this event, we will be staffing it with every member of our teams, the Hoover Ambassadors, and many alums of our program. We would welcome volunteers willing to assist in this major endeavor, and will award community service hours for students who are willing to help for the day," Rutsky said.
