Spain Park Law Academy Heading Back to the National Championship

16 April 2021

HCS- While it is three parts, their motto is simple: have fun, do your best, and be professional.

That is the mantra of the Spain Park Law Academy.

Craig Thompson is one of the teachers part of the law academy, along with Phillip Pate and Dr. Jennifer Smith. Thompson says the students that participate are very talented. He says one instance always reminds him just how talented his students are. That moment comes when people not immersed in the academy watch them perform.

Recently, the team competed in the YMCA Youth Judicial Mock Trial State Competition, eventually finding themselves in a rematch of last year’s finals with the also talented Hoover High School Law Academy.

The verdict: another bid for the Spain Park Law Academy to the National High School Mock Trial Championship.

"While we are used to competing in federal courthouses with a view of the Empire State Building, this year did not change what we stand for," team member Vincent Indovina said. "Since freshman year, our coach and sponsor, Craig Thompson, has told us to 'have fun, do your best, and maintain professionalism,' and this year did not change that. It was easy to get discouraged and burned out with this different type of competition, but we persevered to set an example for the new members of the Law Academy and help them discover a new passion for what we do. At the end of the three-month-long competition, Thompson told us, 'In a hard year, you guys have been a ray of hope, integrity, and strength.'"

The competition will gavel in on May 13th and go through May 15th. Thompson says competitions like these require tireless preparation, even catching the eyes of Former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Sandra Day O’Connor, and the late Antonin Scalia.

For Thompson, competing at the national level is a wonderful achievement, but he is quick to offer the following into evidence:

“The accolades are secondary to doing it the right way for the right reasons,” Thompson said.
