Gwin Librarian Wins Statewide Award

(GWIN) - Jennifer Northrup has always been keen to mold her passion for technology with her role as librarian at Gwin Elementary School.
This came to the fore earlier this summer as she was the recipient of the Alabama School Library Association’s Ann Marie Pipkin Technology Award for 2019.
Nominated by fellow Gwin educator Enrichment Specialist Traci Ingleright and Tarrant High School librarian Jennifer Powell, Northrup was honored at the ASLA’s summer conference.
“It’s nice to see the fruits of my labor and that of the students be recognized,” she said. “I’ve always had a passion for technology in education. I do it for the students and take great pleasure in them embracing the digital narrative.”
While there was no financial award, Northrup was delighted to be recognized.
“I so enjoy the collaboration with teachers and students as we all continue with new digital literacy programs that enhance computer science standards.
“I also put together Professional Development sessions for the teachers at Gwin, for the district-wide PD days and across the state.”
Northrup is entering her third year at Gwin; previously she was a librarian at Oak Mountain Elementary and Forest Hills Elementary in Florence. She received her bachelor degree in Library Media Specialist from Auburn University, with her Masters in the same specialty from the University of West Alabama.
The Ann Marie Pipkin Technology Award is named for the long-time educator of the same name, who retired in 2011, after serving as a librarian at Hoover High School and the Alabama School of Fine Arts for almost 20 years. Among many accolades, Pipkin received the ASLA’s Eminent Librarian Award in 2016 and their Distinguished Service Award in 2010.
According to the award criteria, it honors a person who has shown outstanding leadership in advancing the practice of educational technology over a substantial period of time, while also showing that they:
* Utilize a wide variety of educational technologies in order to better serve students, faculty, administrators and the community.
* Provide educational technology professional development and mentoring to other professionals at a local, statewide, or national level.
* Started a specific initiative that integrates technology into their program.
* Collaborate with educators to combine technology with curriculum to research or present information.
