International Baccalaureate Hoover City Schools

  • Dear Students in the Class of 2025,

As you begin the process of registering for high school classes, you will get to learn about all of the exceptional programs and opportunities available in Hoover City Schools. One of these programs is the IB or International Baccalaureate program, which is housed at Hoover High School and is open to anyone in the Hoover City Schools District.

IB is a unique program that is offered at schools around the world and in approximately a dozen schools in Alabama. This means that Hoover City’s IB students earn the most widely-known and respected diploma in the world! Over the past twenty-three years, Hoover IB students have achieved IB scores above the national and worldwide average, showing that they compare academically to the best students in the world. IB students are well-rounded, participating in the arts, athletics, and community service while taking on leadership roles both inside and outside of the classroom.

I know this year has had all kinds of challenges, and due to the staggered and virtual schedules, you and your teachers may not have gotten to know each other as well as in previous years. So often it is teacher suggestions that encourage students to try advanced classes in high school, but this year more than any other, it is going to be important for you to assess yourself and think about what you want and are capable of doing in 9th grade and beyond.  For the past couple of years, students have been asked to use this rubric to assess readiness for advanced classes, so please take some time and go through this rubric, and then have a parent/guardian fill it out as well.  Be honest with yourself, but also be aware that this school year might not be the only thing to consider in determining things.   Are you interested in learning?  Do you work to your best effort and turn work in completed and on time?  Do you plan on going to college? Do you want to surround yourselves with other students who are intellectually-curious and academically motivated?  If you answered yes to most of these questions, you sound like a Pre-IB student.

Who should take Pre-IB   Why should you take Pre-IB?

Rather than having an in-person curriculum night where you get to come up to the school with your parent/guardian and hear about all of the programs and opportunities Hoover High has to offer, starting on February 8th you are going to have online access to a variety of videos and online resources. The video for the
presentation about IB is linked here, and see below for a variety of other resources that may help you make the best decisions about 9th grade.

One of the best features of our IB program is the community it creates.  Our students are immediately connected with a diverse group of students who are all committed to making the most of their high school years.  We offer social events and field trips for our students in grades 9-12. Even in the midst of the pandemic, when in-person events have not been possible, our IB students gathered together online to discuss racial issues in a town-hall type meeting and played virtual trivia together.  Check out the link My IB Life to see all the different extracurricular activities our students are involved in and Why Choose IB? to hear from students and parents who have experienced what IB has to offer.

The IB program also provides a community of adults who work together to get to know our students and support their needs.  Here are just a few of those teachers who would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

    • Amy Tew (atew@hoover.k12.al.us) teaches Pre-IB English 9 and serves as a Pre-IB CREW (homeroom) teacher.
    • Matt Walker (mwalker@hoover.k12.al.us) teaches both Pre-IB History 9 and Advanced Level History 9 and serves as the history department head.
    • Reed Lochamy (rlochamy@hoover.k12.al.us) serves as a Pre-IB and IB CREW (homeroom) teacher, teaches IB English 11, and coordinates our CAS program (an IB diploma requirement that challenges students to engage in physical activity, creative endeavors, and service projects).

Here are some opportunities to learn more about the IB program:

Please feel free to contact me if you would like more information or just want to be added to my list to make sure you are included on all future IB emails.
