27-Mar-15 (HCS) – The Finley Committee for Character Education staged its 20th Annual Finley Awards Banquet Thursday, March 26, at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center.  Nearly 900 were in attendance, including more than 100 student honorees.

The two-hour program honored the 2015 Finley Award winners, seniors John Charles Nichols (Hoover High School) and Jeffrey Bannon (Spain Park High School) and employee winner Mr. Robert Cofield, an English teacher at Hoover High School.  Finley Character Recognition Award winners in grades 3-12 from all Hoover City Schools were also honored at the banquet.  Grades K-2 are honored at school-level ceremonies throughout the spring.

Being the 20th anniversary, all past Finley Award winners were invited to attend this year’s banquet.  More than a third were in attendance, including 1996 Finley Award winner (employee) Sara Bryan and 1997 Finley Award winner (employee) Soon-Bok Sellers - just to name a few.

William Gray serves as Chairman of the 2014-15 Finley Committee for Character Education.  Formed in 1995, it’s a committee comprised of school and community leaders which seeks to advance and recognize character education in Hoover City Schools.  The committee puts on a Faith Breakfast each year in addition to the Finley Awards Banquet.  Grade-level Finley winners are chosen by teachers; Finley Award winners are selected through a nomination process each winter.
