08-Feb-2014 (HCS) – Twelve challenges centered on a “Buccaneer Pirates” theme capped off a district-wide HCS Lego Robotics Challenge Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Brock’s Gap Intermediate School.  Scores of students competed in challenges that tested their knowledge of engineering, science, math and other skills.

Mrs. Julie Altmark, an enrichment specialist at Bluff Park Elementary and Shades Mountain Elementary, helped coordinate this latest challenge – one of three Lego Robotics competitions across the district.

“Our Lego Competition was a great success,” Altmark said. “We had about 90 kids, at least that many parents and middle school kids judging under the leadership of Mr. Steve Fox (Simmons Middle School teacher).”

Lego Clubs and sponsors of those clubs from eight Hoover City Schools (Bluff Park Elementary; Brock’s Gap Intermediate School; Deer Valley Elementary School; Green Valley Elementary School; Greystone Elementary School; Riverchase Elementary School; Trace Crossings Elementary School; and Shades Mountain Elementary School) were all on hand for the challenge, which began early Saturday and last until noon.

Last month, a similar challenge took place at Greystone Elementary School and was featured by AL.com

One more HCS Lego Competition remains: Saturday, March 15 at Green Valley Elementary School (Shades Mtn. Elementary co-hosting).  The theme will be “African Safari.”
