16-Dec-2013 (HCS) -  Hoover City Schools' Teachers of the Year for the 2013-2014 school year have been announced.  An educator captures this top honor through faculty, staff and administration recommendations/nominations.  It represents the highest honor within a school.

"Being selected by your peers for excellence is an incredible honor," Superintendent of Schools Mr. Andy Craig, said.  "We are fortunate to have high-quality teachers throughout our school system."

Hoover City Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Ellen Anson, a 39-year teaching veteran currently serving in Rocky Ridge Elementary School's multi-handicapped, self-contained classroom.  The system's Secondary Teacher of the Year is Mr. Craig Thompson, a social studies teacher (9th/10th grades) at Spain Park High School.  Anson and Thompson were surprised in separate ceremonies at their schools on Monday, December 16, 2013.

"It's always an honor to recognize our teachers.  Teachers are the catalysts for learning; it's not just a profession, it's a vocation," Assistant Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Melody Greene, said.

"We are blessed with awesome teachers in all of our schools.  When one or a few of those awesome teachers are identified as ambassadors of the other awesome teachers, that is an occasion worth celebrating.  Iron sharpens iron, and these teachers challenge all of us to keep sharpening our tools to reach kids through creative and innovative teaching strategies," Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Ron Dodson, said.

HCS Teachers of the Year are put forward as State Board of Education District IV candidates for the Alabama Teacher of the Year Program, administered by the Alabama State Board of Education and the Alabama State Department of Education.

Hoover City Schools has been fortunate to have many teachers advance to represent the Alabama Teacher of the Year program.  As stated in the application process, the purpose of the Alabama Teacher of the year program is to "....seek annually to honor and recognize excellence in the teaching profession by identifying outstanding Alabama classroom teachers at local, district and state levels."  The Alabama Teacher of the Year Program is separate from the Jacksonville State University Teacher Hall of Fame, another prestigious program which annually recognizes excellence in education.  See Hoover City Schools' JSU nominees.
