04-16-2013 (HCS) - Out of the original national candidate pool of 3.2 MILLION high school seniors, two HCS students have made the final round for the U.S. Presidential Scholars competition.

Sushmitha Yarrabothula of Hoover High School and Kevin Yang of Spain Park High School, both seniors, now sit among 550 finalists nationwide in this academic competition. Both have advanced due to outstanding transcripts, student-submitted essays and school-submitted recommendations.

Both students realize the magnitude of this announcement.

“I'm excited about this accomplishment and so is my family. It’s a great opportunity to get this far so we will see where it goes,” Yarrabothula said.

“There are many amazing students on that candidate list and I didn’t believe I had a chance. I did what I could to get to the semifinalist stage and I’m really happy. Now, I just really hope I can make it to the finals,” Yang said.

Yang and Yarrabothula stand as no strangers to the academic spotlight.  Consider the involvement of these two students at their respective schools:

Yang also made it to the semifinals of JEOPARDY!’s Teen Tournament in May 2012.

Both students have multiple offers following graduation on May 22.  Kevin Yang plans to attend UAB this fall as part of the Early Medical School Acceptance Program. He plans to become a doctor.  Sushmitha Yarrabothula remains undecided at this point, but is leaning toward studying biomedical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.

From this group of 550, up to 141 students nationally will be selected later this year as U.S. Presidential Scholars and will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., according to the program's website.  There, student honorees will receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion at an official ceremony.
