25-Feb. (RFBMS) - Numerous nominations and letters of recommendations came in on Jason Watson’s behalf. They were from people representing various walks of life: principals, teachers, coaches, friends and other colleagues. Several who put Jason forward for this award personally knew Coach Bob Finley – and have been impressed at Coach Finley’s characteristics which Jason also embodies.

As one of his nominators framed it, “From his work inside the classroom which focuses on civics and geography that he takes most seriously to the work on the fields – Mr. Jason Watson is an honorable man, without a doubt worthy of representing the memory and character of Bob Finley.”

Another said, “Jason encourages and expects the best from his students and athletes. He models the characteristics of honesty, hard work, trustworthiness and humbleness and expects the same qualities from the many young people he interacts with each day.”

A native of Birmingham and an alumnus of UAB, Jason Watson joined Hoover City Schools in 2003. He teaches 7th grade social studies and also coaches the 8th grade football team at R.F. Bumpus Middle School. He and his wife Stephanie, who also teaches for Hoover City Schools, have three children.

Watson celebrates his 2013 Finley Award alongside student winners at Hoover High School (Hunter Gibson) and Spain Park High School (Thomas (Tom) Paduch). All three will be honored at the 2013 Finley Awards Banquet, scheduled for Thursday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center.  See more photos from the surprise ceremonies.
