2013 Hoover High School Finley Award Winner: Hunter Gibson back button

25-Feb. (HHS) - As a sophomore, Hunter Gibson was involved in a serious golf cart accident. It was an incident that threated his life and tested his character. Instead of making it an “all-about-me” injury, Hunter re-directed the attention to victims of other similar accidents. He returned to the hospital not as a patient, but as a volunteer – giving of his time and energy to cheer up and support other patients. His outreach efforts even inspired others at Hoover High School to do the same.

Now, that example of Hunter’s caring attitude and other attributes have led to his winning the 2013 Finley Award for Hoover High School. If anyone personifies Hoover High School, it’s Hunter Gibson. In fact, his peers voted him “Mr. Hoover” for the Class of 2013. That moniker speaks to Hunter’s level of involvement at this huge campus – a place where he has truly found many ways to stay “plugged in”. From SGA President to the HHS Ambassadors to Toy Drive Organizer, Hunter has literally done it all at Hoover High School.

As a nominator put it, “With every action, I grow more and more in awe of the amazing young man I have come to know. He has inspired me to be a better person, never fails to amaze me with his leadership and exemplifies what it means to truly put others before yourself. I cannot think of another person, in all my years of teaching, that is more deserving or more perfectly encompasses the Finley Award.”

Hunter Gibson is 18 years old. He is the son of the late Jim Gibson and Lesa Gibson.  His mother Lesa teaches at Hoover High School.  Following Hoover High School, he has plans to attend Auburn University and explore a career in the medical field.

Gibson celebrates his 2013 Finley Award alongside his Spain Park High School counterpart, Thomas (Tom) Paduch and HCS Finley Award Employee Winner, Mr. Jason Watson.  All three will be honored at the 2013 Finley Awards Banquet, scheduled for Thursday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center.  See more photos from the surprise ceremonies.
