Future Finance Pros from HCS Place Nationally in AICPA Competition back button

7-Feb-2013 (HHS) – For the second time in as many years, Hoover High School’s Finance Academy has had teams place nationally in AICPA’s (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) StartHereGoPlaces Project Innovation. The competition encourages students to learn more about careers in the accounting field. Now, votes are needed to help catapult the students to scholarship territory.

The two Hoover High School teams, comprised of Finance and Accounting students, have placed in the Top 8 for 2013: Runaway Red and The Firm. AICPA’s website has the Top 8 videos featured and ready for votes. Runaway Red’s video entry, “Does Your Accountant Balance You?” features various students. Here’s a synopsis of the project, as written by the students:

Based upon the drama of a reality show and the fun had on a good ole’ game show. In this scenario, a client owning her own business is in financial uncertainty and has come on the show because her current accountant is slacking off on the job and cheated her of proper records and tax returns, costing her financial safety. The client is no longer happy with her accountant but is willing to give him one last chance. However, for her current accountant to keep his job he must compete against three other highly qualified CPAs all competing for the client’s new business in a game show atmosphere. Will the client keep her chemistry with her current accountant alive or will she find someone that balances her better in one of the CPAs?

A video produced by the team The Firm takes a different approach, though it packs just as big a punch as its in-school rival:

Two entry level CPAs, Jeff and Tyrone, are trying to work their way up to partner. While doing so, nothing seems to work to their benefit. Current partner, Carl often requires massive amounts of work in short periods of time. They have a long, hard road ahead of them and there is no slowing down now. The hours are long, the work is hard, and the boss is… crazy. These are challenges but they make it work with the help of each other and some fun around the office. This quirky, awkward comedy follows friendships and blossoming relationships as these two CPAs try to work their way up the corporate ladder.

Please vote! Scholarship money is at stake! Madge Gregg, NBCT, serves as director of the Finance Academy.
