31-Jan-2013 (HPTC/HCS) - More than 100 educators, students, parents and city dignitaries showed up for the Hoover Parent-Teacher Council’s (HPTC) annual City Leaders Breakfast held at Hoover’s Discovery United Methodist Church.

The breakfast recognizes the outstanding public safety contributions given daily by both fire and law enforcement. This year’s keynote speaker was Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis. Chief Derzis filled in for scheduled speaker Dr. Tommy Bice, State Superintendent of Education, who had to cancel due to other priorities. Derzis touched on the remarkable partnership which exists in Hoover among the police and fire departments and the school system. He also commented on school safety, noting that violent incidents in schools have actually *decreased* over the years thanks to SROs (School Resource Officers).

Beyond touting the benefits of police and fire protection, the City Leaders Breakfast is also an opportunity to honor students who have placed in the 3rd Grade Poetry Contest [content related to Fire Dept.] and the 5th Grade Essay Contest [content related to Police Dept]. This year’s winners include:
