25-Jan-13 (GWIN) – An “international flair” filled the air today at Gwin Elementary School, as hundreds gathered to participate in the school’s annual International Day today. Students, staff and parents were joined by Gary Ivey, Mayor of Hoover, who launched the event along with principal Dr. Kimberly White.

Students marched into Gwin’s gymnasium as part of a “Flag Parade” – where they carried flags representing their heritage. Thirty-two countries were represented during the march. Following the parade, a group of students performed the national anthem using sign language. The audience was then entertained with a Chinese Opera performed by two Chinese natives. The final performance of the International Day kick-off ceremony consisted of a cultural dance to international music by a local dance troupe.

True to its name, International Day continued throughout Friday. Gwin students had a jam-packed schedule filled with international activities. Scheduled events included an international fashion show, language-learning and tribal dances designed to teach balance techniques. International Day always closes with an international food sampling held in the school’s cafeteria.

Gwin Elementary students and staff look forward every year to this tradition of learning and celebrating cultural diversity.
