7-Dec-2012 (SPHS) – The highly-celebrated Spain Park High School Theatre program has some down-time between now and March – when it will participate in the 64th Annual Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in Louisville, Kentucky. Until that conference arrives, theatre students will be celebrating the holidays, starting second semester and maintaining stage skills through travelling shows like Alice’s Adventures.

Spain Park High School Theatre Instructor Eric St. John and his students have much to celebrate as they prepare for SETC, following a successful showing in December at Alabama’s premier theatre festival – the Trumbauer State Theatre Festival.

“SPHS Theatre had a fantastic weekend at the 73rd Annual Trumbauer State Theatre Festival, winning numerous awards for individual events and its one-act play. Fourteen plays and almost 1,300 individual events from 71 Alabama high schools competed at this year’s Festival,” St. John said.

St. John also serves as State Chair of the Trumbauer Theatre Festival, which is put on by the Alabama Conference of Theatre.

The Servant of Two Masters, the one-act, captured awards for one All-Star Cast member, Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor. The play finished in First Place and will be one of two schools to represent the state of Alabama at SETC. Winning the one-act marks the fifth time in seven years that Spain Park High School has won the state championship.

Among the eight individual awards earned by the program, SPHS captured 1st Place, Solo Male Comedic Varsity (comedic monologues); 2nd Place in Solo Musical Female Comedic (Varsity); and 2nd Place in Varsity Makeup Design.
