Feature Teacher HCS: Trace Crossings' Shelley Bowen back button

The number "seven" plays out a lot in the life of Trace Crossings Elementary kindergarten teacher Shelley Bowen.  She's been in education for seven years, been at Trace Crossings Elementary seven years and has a beagle named Gabby - who is seven.  Perhaps the the mystique behind that number has truly brought Bowen good luck - a teacher who considers herself fortunate to experience her passion every day.

The Luverne, Ala., native met her future husband at Troy University before heading to Montevallo for her graduate degree.  She was on the dance line in college - and considers herself a cook, sewer and crafter.  She has a self-proclaimed obession with "organizing and re-organizing", too.  When she's not molding young lives at Trace Crossings Elementary, Bowen can be found at two of her favorite places - her Grandmother's house and Helena's Fox Valley restaurant.

Q: How did you become interested in teaching?

A: I grew up wanting to be a teacher. I would play school for hours. The fact that my mom was a teacher could have had some impact on me as well. :-)

Q: What advice would you give teachers-in-training?

A: Always try to be a better teacher than you were the day before. That's a special quote from my principal and it has stuck with me.

Q: How has your teaching evolved over the years with different state/federal standards, technology, etc?

A: Completely! Thankfully, I can look back and see a complete transformation that helps nurture my students' curiosity about learning. True professional development is a great thing. :-)

Q: What’s the most unusual thing a student has ever asked you/done in class?

A: One student asked me, "Can I take you home with me?"

Q: How does this school year compare to others thus far?

A: The 4th week of school I had an emergency appendectomy so it hasn't slowed down since. I didn't imagine that happening.

Q: What’s the best part of your day?

A: When my students arrive in the mornings. They have the biggest grins and are so eager to learn. It melts my heart!
