HCS Student Wins National Art Award back button

6 April (SPHS) - Spain Park High School’s Annabelle DeCamillis has won the Scholastic Art & Writing National Gold Medal Award for her oil painting titled “Rococo Renovation.” This is the first such award garnered by a student at Spain Park High School.

DeCamillis’ teacher is Mrs. Cindy Childers.

“The winning piece is a 30” x 40” self-portrait in oil. The beautiful young lady (Annabelle) is pictured in an Elizabethan pink gown, standing in Home Depot in the paint section, looking at paint chips. Within the viewer, the piece sets up Surrealistic tension, a contrast of time periods and a contrast of female roles as well. It is painted in a realistic style with heightened lighting and color,” Childers said. "The piece is amazing. I am so fortunate to have Annabelle as a student."

Though considered a national competition, works are submitted from around the globe, Childers said. There were 10,000 pieces submitted to this year’s contest and around 800 received awards in a large variety of categories. There were around 40 that received gold status in the painting category of those 800, most of those winners were seniors (DeCamillis is a junior). Andy Warhol was an alum, winning a medal for Scholastic, Childers added.

Annabelle DeCamillis flies to New York City in June along with her teacher Mrs. Childers for official recognition.

DeCamillis was recognized earlier this year along with another HCS student (Eric Kidd, Simmons Middle School) for having a winning submission in the 2012 Alabama State Superintendents Visual Arts Competition.  See coverage here.
