03-09-2016 (HCS) - Six Hoover City Schools students have demonstrated exceptional knowledge of geography and as such - will participate in the upcoming Alabama Geography Bee on April 1. Student representatives of Hoover City Schools include:

• Keith Warner, 5th Grade – Riverchase Elementary School
• Jacob Roe, 4th Grade – Rocky Ridge Elementary School
• Kapil Nathan, 6th Grade – Brock’s Gap Intermediate School
• Keegan Moore, 6th Grade – Simmons Middle School

Kapil Nathan from Brock’s Gap Intermediate School is the reigning state champion. Eligible state Bee competitors must be in grades four through eight, and must have participated in and won the competition at the school level that involved at least six students. A winner from Alabama will go on to represent the state at the National Geographic Bee.

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge.

The National Geographic Bee website is an excellent resource to help students prepare for the Bee. Students can find study resources, download the Nat Geo Bee app, take the daily quiz, and access the Bee store to purchase books and prizes for Bee contestants.

For additional geographic resources and programs visit the Alabama State Geography Alliance website. You will find the links to each state alliance at the National Geographic Alliances website.
