SPHS Stages "Amelia the Brave" This Summer

05-21-2014 (SPHS) - Spain Park High School Theatre may have wrapped up its season, but the work of the young actors is far from over.  On June 3rd, the school’s theatre department will stage “Amelia the Brave” in the SPHS Theatre.  During the same week, it will stage the play at a regional theatre festival in Georgia.

Written, scored, designed and produced by students, “Amelia the Brave” debuted in December at Alabama’s Trumbauer Theatre Festival – where SPHS was named “Best in Show” (8th time program has captured this award).   The show tells the story of a young girl who must confront the sudden illness of a loved one.  It’s multi-media approach combines live music, pantomime, puppetry, shadow puppetry and animation, according to SPHS theatre director, Mr. Eric St. John.

“Judges at the December festival called it ‘luminous,’ ‘beautifully done… sweet, fresh and unique,’ a play that ‘made me fall in love with theatre again,’” St. John said.

It was January when the team submitted the play for consideration to the Atlanta Fringe Festival, “…a nascent festival that features alternative and new theatre,” according to St. John (http://atlantafringe.org/).  Spain Park has been selected as one of twenty acts from across the nation and Canada to perform at the festival, which will take place in early June (June 5-8) in Atlanta’s Little Five Points.

“For the students, it marks a step toward professional performance.  It is their first time presenting a show at a festival not exclusively designed for high school theatre students,” St. John said.

“Amelia the Brave” will be performed five times over the four-day festival.  The June 3rd encore public performance of “Amelia the Brave” at Spain Park will be at 7:00 p.m., 4700 Jaguar Drive, Hoover, and will also feature a performance by renowned local storyteller Dolores Hydock.  For more information, please contact 205.439.1400.
