16-Dec-2013 (HCS) - In conjunction with school-level Teachers of the Year, Hoover schools also select nominees for the Jacksonville State University Teacher Hall of Fame.  District nominees for this year include Mrs. Carol McLaughlin (Greystone Elementary School); Mrs. Cindi Morris (Simmons Middle School); and Mrs. Lauren Gilbert Hall (Spain Park High School).  These three were honored with the titles of HCS JSU District Nominees in surprise ceremonies on Monday, December 16, 2013.

"It's a great honor to be recognized by your peers for your quality of work in the classroom," Superintendent Mr. Andy Craig said.  "These teachers represent the quality of teaching practices common in Hoover City Schools."

In 1969, Jacksonville State University initiated a Teacher Hall of Fame under the direction of then-president Dr. Houston Cole. This program was to honor and to recognize classroom teachers of Alabama public schools.

Specific criteria are used to select nominees. Nominee must be currently teaching subject matter to students at least 50% of each school day. Degrees held, length of teaching experience, and current teaching assignments are also taken into consideration. No preference is given to nominees who may have attended Jacksonville State University. They must maintain exemplary standards of behavior and ethics, exhibit leadership, be enthusiastic about teaching, demonstrate competency in subject matter, work well with colleagues and administrators, and constantly seek to encourage, inspire and motivate students toward greater accomplishment.

Each public school system in the state is urged to participate by nominating one elementary teacher, one middle level teacher and one secondary teacher each year to be considered for this award.  Hoover City Schools has had several educators inducted into the JSU Teacher Hall of Fame.  See the list here.
