05-01-2013 (SPHS) - Spain Park High School's Law Academy will travel to Indianapolis next week for the National High School Mock Trial Championship.  In preparation for their appearance, the team had a trial run Friday, May 3 at Birmingham's Adams & Reese Law Firm with longtime Jefferson County Judge Honorable Scott Vowell.

In Indiana, Law Academy students will hold mock trials, a way to stimulate and encourage a deeper understanding of the American legal system.  The competition provides students opportunities to learn the judicial system through hands-on experiences.  Students are provided with case materials and asked to develop their own strategies as they play the roles of attorneys and witnesses.  In the competition, both sides of a case are presented and the presentation is judged by real judges and attorneys.

Judge Vowell* and other attorneys from Adams & Reese will review their case and offer pointers ahead of the competition.

Spain Park High School's Law Academy is no stranger to the spotlight.  They gained national attention late last year while stuck in New York City at the Empire State Mock Trial Competition following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  Spain Park High School teacher Mrs. Libby Day serves as the Law Academy Director.

*Judge Vowell has been a circuit judge since January, 1995 and is currently the presiding judge in Jefferson County. Prior to his service on the Court, Judge Vowell practiced law with Beddow, Embry, & Beddow (1961 - 1987) and Vowell & Meelheim (1987 - 1994). Judge Vowell, a graduate of Auburn University (B.A. - 1959) and the University of Virginia (J.D. - 1961), is active in the American Bar Association, the American Bar Institute, the Alabama Law Institute, the American Judicature Society, and the Birmingham Inn of Court.
