19-Apr-13 (GVES) – In three short days, a second-grade class at Green Valley Elementary has collected more than $350.00 through an outreach program in response to the Boston Marathon tragedy.

Students in Mrs. Jennifer Kuklinski’s class have been making “Boston Bracelets” and selling them to faculty, staff and fellow classmates for $1.00 each. Proceeds will go to Children’s Hospital of Alabama in memory of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old victim of the blast.

“(Raising this kind of money in just three days) is amazing. Our students are amazing,” Mrs. Kuklinksi said.

Students conceptualized the idea following a classroom discussion Tuesday surrounding the tragedy. From an educator's perspective, it’s easy to see the educational value of such a project.

“From just a technical standpoint, they have learned how to organize a project, gather data, count money, deliver on promises and speak in front of a crowd,” Kuklinski said. “But on a deeper level, I believe they have learned at a very young - and typically selfishly "me" age - that the world is much bigger than what they see from day to day and that some of that big world includes big pain. They have learned that they need to be the best person they can be and do all the good they can do in a day whether they are 8 or 80.”

Kuklinksi says every single student has contributed to this cause “quickly, kindly and generously.” She and the administrative staff at Green Valley Elementary remain very proud of these young “self-starters” – who currently are on back-order for bracelets.

“We are still working on this project and have many yet to deliver,” Kuklinski said. “But we’re getting there!”

The class will collect money over the next several school days and then send a check to Children's Hospital.  For more information, contact the school at 205-439-2500.
