Simmons Middle School's Student Government learns valuable skills from Dr. Tyson

SMS--Simmons Middle School's Student Government students learned leadership and problem solving skills today during several interactive activities with Lawrence E. Tyson, Ph.D. Dr. Tyson, Associate Professor in the UAB Counselor Education Program, and his student Jessica Damico, visited Simmons Middle School with his team-building ropes course.

Mrs Cherie Hickey, a graduate student of Dr. Tyson, arranged this fun-filled day with many goals in mind for her students. Increased decision-making, group cohesion, trust building, and leadership development were all emphasized throughout the activities. The students enjoyed the challenges and tasks Dr. Tyson gave them. All participants portrayed leadership skills and team unity during today's exercises.

Dr. Tyson is also a School Counseling Advisor and works in adventure education. This type of education utilizes problem solving activities that require individuals or groups to exercise their decision-making skills.
