17-March-2013 (BGIS) – On Friday, March 22, Hoover’s Brock’s Gap Intermediate School will host 5K for a Kause – a fun-filled day centered on service-to-community featuring the renowned Sports Illustrated Kid’s 2012 SportsKids of the Year – Connor and Cayden Long.

The Long brothers will serve as Grand Marshalls of student fun-runs to be held throughout the day on the Brock’s Gap Intermediate School track. All proceeds from 5K for a Kause benefit charities chosen by event organizers: Rays of Hope (via The Station church), the Alabama Hydrocephalus Association and Team Long Brothers.

“Our hope is that Brock’s Gap students will become increasingly aware of the needs of others and realize, no matter their age, that they can make a difference in someone’s life,” Brock’s Gap physical education instructor, Bridgette Rayfield, said.

According to Rayfield, the school’s Fuel Up to Play 60 team, Healthy Schools Program and Physical Education Department annually put on a “Fun Run.” In talks with the Brock’s Gap Leadership Team, it was decided this year’s “Fun Run” should morph into much more – with a community service focus and a star-visit by the Long brothers.

Connor and Cayden Long live in Tennessee and have gained notoriety around the country for their tight bond and their amazing successes at athletic events. Cayden, who suffers from a condition known as hypertonic cerebral palsy, joins his brother Connor in events such as triathlons thanks to special accommodations. Their unique competition style catapulted them to become the “2012 Sports Illustrated Kids SportsKids of Year” in December 2012 at a star-studded recognition ceremony in New York City.

Having the Long brothers join 5K for a Kause at Brock’s Gap Intermediate School will help reinforce the “service to community” concept, according to BGIS Principal Mr. Scott Mitchell.

"The event serves as a win-win for our school combining our yearly spring fitness event, teaching our students to give back to the community and helping three worthy causes close to all of our hearts,” Mitchell said.

The best media availablity times include 8AM and 12PM - in conjunction with race start times.  For more information on 5K for a Kause please contact 205-439-1600.
