8-Mar-13 (RES) - Physical education has risen to a new level - at least at Hoover's Riverchase Elementary School - where a unit on golf has been added to the lineup for spring.

Physical education instructors Blake Gilchrist and Will Patridge have spent months of planning on the golf unit which was unveiled this week much to the delight of students.

“Overall, our golf unit has been such a positive experience,” Gilchrist said. “The amount of work it took to build the mini golf course has definitely paid off.”

Students in all grades (K-5) have cycled in and out of the Riverchase Elementary gym to enhance their golf game, a unit which lasts two weeks. The space has transformed into a “Putt-Putt” course of sorts - rivaling some commercial versions.

“We didn’t want to do the same golf we’ve always done. We wanted to find ways to introduce new concepts,” Patridge said.

Gilchrist and Patridge have utilized software available on iPads which demonstrates grip, stroke speed, swing and other golf techniques. Additionally, the duo has taught the students how to properly keep score.

“Any time that Coach Patridge and I can teach proper techniques, in golf or any other lifelong sport, while providing a new, fun and challenging activity, we feel like it’s making a positive impact on our students - and that is always a great feeling,” Gilchrist said.
