12-15-2012 (SPHS) - From practicing law to teaching to writing poetry to translating some of the greatest writings of all time - Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Canterbury Tales, and Don Quixote, Burton Raffel is one of America's foremost scholars. He is also the author of the classic text, How to Read a Poem. Most recently, Dr. Raffel has been Professor Emeritus at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and in 2010 had his first novel, Yankee Doric: America Before the Civil War, published. Spain Park is incredibly honored and excited to talk to Dr. Burton Raffel.

It's against this incredible backdrop that Spain Park High School seniors got a chance to Skype with Dr. Raffel, arranged by department teachers including Mrs. Jill Sturgeon.

"The session was wonderful - we didn't have too many expectations except to allow the kids to experience the man whose translations of Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight they have read this semester," Sturgeon said.  "I really wanted to get him to come live to speak to the kids, but he told me via email that his health does not allow him to travel. I have been giddy about this day because, for the nerdy English teachers, Burton Raffel is a big deal!"
