Wal-Mart Awards $1000.00 Grant to Berry Middle School

10-16-2012 (BMS) - After an application process, Berry Middle School has been awarded a $1000.00 education grant from Wal-Mart.  The money was divided into gift cards and a drawing was held at a recent faculty meeting where Wal-Mart representatives were present.

BMS principal Dr. Kathleen Wheaton has said numerous faculty members who won the gift cards have already expressed ideas for their use:

  • A seventh grade science teacher plans to purchase chicken wings for their dissection activity and will also consider purchasing exam gloves.
  • Another seventh grade science teacher will purchase classroom supplies and lab supplies such as corn and lima beans (Life Science activities), fertilizer, and containers.
  • An eighth grade language arts teacher will use part of the money to purchase index cards for student use.
  • A physical education teacher has discussed uses of the money with the PE department.  They are looking at physical fitness aids such as foam blocks for push-ups and posters to display fitness zones.  They also are considering floor tape to mark the floor for an activity called 4 Square.
  • A seventh grade social studies teacher will purchase spiral notebooks for students to use for Interactive Student Notebooks in Reading.
  • A sixth grade math teacher plans to purchase extra calculators.
  • Our speech language pathologist will purchase materials to use with language groups.  These materials will be geared to specific needs and levels of understanding.

In a thank-you letter to Wal-Mart, Dr. Wheaton said, "....As you can see, the Walmart grant will be used wisely and for the benefit of our students.  Thank you again for your kindness."

Congrats Berry Middle School!
