Celebrating 50 Years of an Iconic Athletics Program

HOOVER, Alabama – The Hoover football team kicked off this year’s homecoming festivities with a 50-0 victory over Jackson-Olin Friday night, but the festivities didn’t end with Saturday night’s dance. To commemorate 50 years of football at both Berry and Hoover, the program will play host to a celebration of its history on October 19 when the Class 6A top-ranked Bucs play Minor.

“Anytime you talk about a program that is traditionally enriched with all the great players and all the great coaches that have been here you definitely want to celebrate that,” Hoover coach Josh Niblett said. “And it’s just a credit to everybody that’s ever been a part of this program and you want to make sure that everybody that’s ever been a part of it will be recognized and I think anytime you have an opportunity for 50 years of football that’s something special.”

The activities are not just limited to players and coaches. Anyone who has ever been a part of the program — cheerleaders, band members, trainers, mascots — is invited to participate. It will be a second homecoming, said athletics director Myra Miles.

“We’re going to celebrate the history of the football program and how successful it’s been, but we not only want to recognize our football players but we trying to bring in former cheerleaders, band members, coaches, anybody involved with that program, because it started way back and it’s come such a long way,” Miles said.
