06-25-2012 (HHS) - To be a top-notch student and a standout athlete requires drive and dedication and investing no small amount of time on both athletics and academics.

It keeps you running.

For Hoover High's Olivia Tofani, a cross country and track and field standout and a member of The Birmingham News All-Metro Academic team, staying in motion is the key to her success.

"With my personality, I have to stay busy," Tofani said. "I feel like if I had a lot of free time, I wouldn't get things done. Athletics taught me discipline and how to get things done and goal-setting, which carries over and helps me with other things in my life."

It takes drive and dedication to remain at a high level athletically and academically, two traits Tofani said she got from her parents, Pete and Jodi, who each served in the United States Army.

Tofani said seeing them dedicate their lives to service motivated her.

"They don't pressure me to do things, they just always encourage me to do my best," she said. "They would also add incentives to push me a little harder. Seeing them work hard made me want to work hard."
