02-14-2013 (HCS) - A calendar has been drafted for the upcoming 2013-2014 HCS school year. A proposed start date of August 19 falls in line with 2012 state legislation requiring local school systems start no earlier than two weeks prior to Labor Day. This calendar also includes: 180 instructional days for students; 188 working days for teachers; 86 instructional days in the first semester and 94 in the second semester; E-Learning Days; two full weeks at Winter Break; a spring break consistent with other Over-The-Mountain districts; and a traditional school year completion by Memorial Day (May 26).

FALL SEMESTER
Aug. 8/9 - New teachers report
Aug. 12-16- Prof. Development/Workday for teachers (no students)
Aug. 19 - 1st day of school for students
Sept. 2 - Labor Day holiday (schools and offices closed)
Oct. 16 - End of 1st 9 weeks (42 days)
Nov. 11 - Veterans Day holiday (schools and offices closed)
Nov. 27 - E-learning Day for Students
Nov. 27 - PD Day for Teachers
Nov. 28-29 -Thanksgiving holidays
Dec. 20 - Last school day of 2013/End of 2nd 9 Weeks (44 days); End of 1st Semester (86 days)
Dec. 23 - Jan.3 -Winter break
SPRING SEMESTER
Jan. 3 - Teacher Workday (no students)
Jan. 6 - Students return to school; 1st day of 2nd semester
Jan. 20 - M.L. King, Jr. Day holiday (schools and offices closed)
Feb. 21 - PD-Workday for Teachers
Feb. 21 - E-Learning Day for Students
March 11 - End of 3rd 9 weeks (46 days)
March 24-28 - Spring break
May 21 - Spain Park High School graduation
May 22 - Hoover High School graduation
May 23 - Last day of second semester for students/End of 4th 9 weeks (48 days); End of 2nd semester (94 days)
May 26 - Memorial Day (schools and offices closed)
May 27/28 - Teacher Workdays
