15-Jan-2017 (HCS) - During the 2016-2017 School Year, Hoover City Schools counselors collaborated with local agencies to begin meeting the requirements of Erin's Law.  One of those requirements is that schools provide age-appropriate curriculum to all students.  The curriculum relates to sexual abuse prevention, which may include a variety of discussions, activities, videos and role play scenarios.  The purpose of the lessons is to provide students tools needed for personal safety and to provide a nurturing and caring environment open for disclosure of any incidents.

Many states, including Alabama, have passed laws with the intent of increasing awareness of child sexual abuse.  Erin's Law came about as a result of Erin Merryn, a brave young woman who has crossed the country advocating for laws that will increase awareness of sex crimes against children.

Statistics show that nationally, one in three girls and one in six boys will be the victim of child sexual abuse by the age of 18.  Through this program aimed at educating and empowering students, our school system wants to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent/combat sexual abuse.  For more information on Erin’s Law, please visit www.erinslaw.org
